James Gregory, Scottish mathematician and astronomer, (1870). In 1663 Gregory (1638-1675) published Optica Promota describing his design for a reflecting telescope, an example of which was constructed by Robert Hooke. He was a supporter of the theories of Isaac Newton, with whom he corresponded. An engraving from Robert Chambers' A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Blackie and Son, (Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London, 1870).
