The steepwestern slope is in the path ofthe southwest monsoon, andtherefore receives very heavysummer rainfall. The rains ofthe inland plateau east of theWestern Ghats are not so you tell why ? During the wet season the rain water is stored in large hollowsor reservoirs; then when the dry seasons come, the water is led inditches over the lower tilled land. The lava-flows of the Dekkan peninsula have been fully as greatas those in and around the Columbia plateau. In each case the. molten rock covered many thousand square miles. The Dekkanlava-flows are much the older and the more deeply cut by surface is finely weathered, making dark soil that is veryfertile. The middle picture on page 12 shows part of this plateau. The portion of the Dekkan that is notburied in lava is mostly an old mountainregion greatly worn down. Gold is foundin the stumps of the old mountains. The rivers which flow eastward across this peninsula have made flood plains and deltas of wonderful fertility. For ages these lowlands have yielded immense crops of rice. All over the peninsula, except on the rugged mountain slopes, cotton and grain are raised. There, as northern India, millet is the chief article of food among the masses of poor people.
