In 1876 he laid out the Baldwin Ceme-tery, for the burial of white persons, and MidlandCemetery for colored persons. Mr. Dunkle erected asubstantial market-house, and was the prime moverin the building of a public hall at Steelton. Josiah A. Dunkle was born Sept. 11, 1834, in Hali-fax, Dauphin Co., Pa. In 1846 his parents removedto a farm in Swatara township, where the son resideduntil 1853. He then learned the trade of a carpen-ter, and as contractor and builder was thus activelyengaged until 1872. The same year he relinquishedhis coal and lumber business, in which he had largeinterests. He was the first to purchase a plot ofground where Churchville is located, and where heresided several years. When the Pennsylvania SteelCompany were first constructing their works he pur- largely engaged in merchandising. Mr. Dunkle mar-ried Mary Bishop, daughter of William Bishop, andthey had two sons and five daughters. * WILLIAM H.
