Apollo 8 spacecraft and the Moon, illustration. The Apollo 8 mission was the first manned space flight to leave low Earth orbit and the first to orbit the Moon. It launched on 21 December 1968 with three crew and reached lunar orbit on 24 December. The spacecraft orbited the Moon 10 times in the space of 20 hours before returning to Earth on the 27th December.
