American Florist:— I have two hot water boilers coupled together, circular grates, one 3 feet in diameter, and the other 2 feet, giving about 10 square feet of grate surface. What area should the chimney be to equal this amount of grate? The chim- ney I now have is no doubt too small, being orily inches inside. If I en- large it to 12x32 inches inside will it be large enough? Tlie question I wish to ask, more particularly, is, will it be necessary to enlarge it all the way up, or will it be sufficient to enlarge it up to the top of inside of boiler shed (about 12 feet), leaving about 10 feet on top outside of same dimensions as before (8x12 inches)? Subscriber. The size of the chimney should be a little greater than the area of the open- ings in the grate, but from what_ you write, I infer that a chimney containing 254 square feet in cross section will an- swer for your two boilers. While the size might be slightly reduced toward the top, I would not care to have it less than 12x24 inches, especially with such a low chimney as that described. The draft could be considerably increased by adding 10 feet to the top of the chimney, but even with this it would not be well to greatly reduce the cross section. L, R. T. Trouble wlih Carnations.
