The rebuilding of Eritrea's railway between Masawa on the Red Sea Coast and Asmara the capital, following 30 years of abandonment and Civil war, was little short of miracle. Here 4 cylinder Compound Mallet 442 54 Italian built by Ansaldo in 1938 is seen at Mai attal on 12 March 1998 having failed with leaking tubes. Many artisans long since retired were recalled to spearhead the renaissance of this former Italian colonial railway albeit that many were in their 70s and 80s.
