Electricity generator. 19th-century illustration of the electromagnetic generator from the Alliance company, used to produce alternating electric current. Such generators uses magnets in the form of a dynamo to convert mechanical rotary motion into electrical power, generating electricity. The first electric generators were developed in the 1860s. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
