This oak was first distinguished as a form, Que reus costarioensis Liebm, f« kuntzei Trelo (7, p„ 146, pl» 283o 1924) by Trelease in his monograph of the American oaks The type specimen was collected on Volcdn Irazu, Province of Cartago, on June 24, 1874, by Otto Kuntze (Noo 2282, Herbo NoYo Boto Gardo)o A photograph of a portion of the type specimen was published by Trelease (p 283b), who listed six other collections of this form from Costa Rica, including specimens of three earlier collectors of ninety to one hundred years ago0 From the type -346-.
