After cleaning themthey were again com- ^. _ ^ pared, and the new 1835value ^= 7999 9764 re-sulted. The last indicate a decidedapparent shortening, which has not been ac-cotinted for satisfactorilyexcept it be due to themanner in which the8-meter bar was built the whole, it hasbeen thought best to adoptthe value of1834-35 for the reduc-tion of the Fire Islandbase as representing theconditions then existing. But one measure of the base was made, owing probably to the labor and timerequired to measure such a long line. The measure was made during the months ofAugust, September, and October, 1834. The above diagram shows the condition at East Monument U. *The fdiiiul in odntiectioti with the Kire Islaiul txise. 46 THE EASTERN OBLIQUE ARC. the eastern end. The distances 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and 4 to 5 were measured with the baseapparatus, and the angular horizontal directions of the fine and heavy lines at thepoints I, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were obtained by means of a theodolite. Calling West 6, the points 6, 5, 4, and 3 were placed in line. For reduction of the measuredlength of the base to sea level, the average height of the bar above the half-tide levelof the Atlantic was taken as 275 meters. The mean temperature of the bar duringmeasurement was 26°60 C. (or 79°90 F. ). The resulting length from West toEast End was as follows: I 725 boxes 13 800^0714 Correction for excess of temperature over o°C + 46o3i Correction for inclination — 02055 Reduction to half-tide level of ocean — ooo6o Resulting length 13 So^4630 Similarl
