BOLEN, or BOLEYN, Anne, daugh-ter of Sir Thomas Bolen, was born in 1507,attended, when only seven years old, thePrincess Mary to France, returned thencein 1527, and was appointed maid of honourto Catherine of Arragon. The lustfultyrant Henry VIII. became enamoured ofher, and, after having obtained a divorce,married Anne in 1533. In September shegave birth to a princess, afterwards QueenElizabeth. Having transferred his affec-tions to Jane Seymour, Henry accused theunfortunate Anne of violating the marriagevow, and, on this pretext, she was be-headed, May the 19th, BOLINGBROKE, Henry St. John,Lord Viscount, son of Sir Henry St. John,was born at Battersea, in 1672, and edu-cated at Eton and Christ Church, obtained a seat in parliament in 1700,and in 1704 was appointed secretary ofwar and the marines, but resigned thesecretaryship in 1707. In 1710, he againformed a part of the ministry, as secretaryof state, and had a principal share in thepeace of LTtrecht. In 1712 he was createdViscount Bolingbroke; but, dissatisfiedwith not having obtained an earldom, andwith other circumstances, he became theenemy of his colleague Harley, of whom hehad long been the friend.
