18th-century cannons. Archaeologists restoring cannons dating from the 18th century, found underwater near the coastal town of Les Sables-d'Olonne, France. The corroded metal parts are being removed, and continuing metal corrosion was halted using an alkaline sulphite chemical solution. A desalination process was carried out over a four-year period, using electrolysis. Finally, the cannons were protected by coating with an epoxy resin. Photographed in France.
