The Street railway journal . e detail elevation viewof the three reservoirs that the air leaves each tank from a pointmidway down its side, and delivers through a long sweepingbend to the top of the next one, this arrangement being made toprovide for free expansion and contraction, due to temperaturechanges. The left-hand reservoir is provided with a lever andball safety valve, connected to the delivery-pipe fitting, asshown, and also a pressure gage will be connected to them. These storage tanks are mounted in an unusual manner, being set vertically with their lower portions projecting intobasement of the building, as shown. This arrangement iseconomical of space, and also provides a convenience of accessto all parts. The details of the stands upon which they are sup-ported, as well as the piping, drainage and other connections, are shown in the detail elevation of these reservoirs in Fig. 2. Street FIG. 2.—PLAN OF THE COMPRESSOR PLANT TO BE INSTALLED AT THE MONTCLAIR CAR DEPOT, SHOWING ALSO DETAILS OF THE STORAGE AND COOLING TANKS coupling connections are to be provided in each depot forcharging the storage tanks while in the house. The air compressors are of the two-stage type, with inter-cooler, the details of one of which compressors are shown inFig. 3. These compressors are of usual construction, havingthe intercooler elevated over the cylinders, as shown. They arevery carefully provided with cylinder jackets for the coolingof cylinder surfaces; cooling water is passed first through thehigh-pressure cylinder, flowing thence to the intercooler andout through the low-pressure cylinder, as indicated in the draw-ing. These compressors are arranged to operate at 100 r. p. m.,and will deliver air at a pressure of 325 lbs.; their capacity israted at 100 cu. ft. per minute at the pressur
