Private First Class Michael Wargo, from Westville, Ill., shows his platoon commander, Sergeant John E. Gaines, from Santa Ana, Calif., where a Viet Cong bullet entered his helmet. Despite the impact, Wargo was unharmed, as the bullet did not penetrate the helmet. Wargo later survived being shot in the flak jacket without injury.
