Caltrans Headquarters, Los Angeles, California, 2004. Overall exterior from south west. Architect: Morphosis

Caltrans Station, Los Angeles Morphosis Architects The new Caltrans District 7 Headquarters in downtown Los Angeles opened, just short of three years from the date the building was commissioned. Designed by Morphosis Architects, the 13-story L-shaped structure has already received a significant amount of praise and criticism from civic leaders, as well as the architectural community. Constructed under a design/build contract, the building was completed on a fast-track schedule of just over two years and came in on budget. The design integrates a unique exterior skin comprised of operable aluminum panels that shield the east and west facades from direct sunlight. On the south wall, a series of photovoltaic cells will generate an electric output of 92 kW, contributing to the building’s overall sustainability. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program (LEED) has given the building a Silver rating. Consuming an entire block in the heart of the Civic Center, the office building is approximately 750,000 square feet. This includes a 3,000 square feet outdoor lobby that will be used for public events. Thom Mayne , founder of Morphosis, winner of the 2005 Pritzker prize
