Iodine in a flask in the form of pellets. This element is part of the halogen group of the periodic table (group 17). It is present in thyroid hormones and some seaweeds. In elemental form it is a blue-black solid (I2) that melts at 113 degrees Celsius. However, it is weakly bonded, which means at room temperature and pressure it can sublimate into a purple gas. The speckled sides of the flask just above the solid pellets show where the iodine has sublimated and then reformed into a solid on the sides of the flask.
