The tale of the wizard Merlin (right) and Nimue, the daughter of the king of Northumberland, is part of Arthurian legend.
This 1917 illustration by Arthur Rackham shows the wizard Merlin and Nimue, the daughter of the king of Northumberland. The tale is part of Arthurian legend, a vast body of medieval story that centers on King Arthur of Britain. Two of the characters in the Lancelot/Grail legend are Arthur and Nimue (also spelled Niviane, Nymue, Miniane, Nyneue, and Viviane). Arthur falls for Nimue but she will only love him if he teaches her all his magic. Later on their way to Arthur, they stop for the night in a stone chamber. Nimue uses the spells she has learned to put Merlin in a magic tomb from which he can never escapes - and thus he dies.
