Chiesa dei Francescani, Bolzano (Bozen), South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: fresco painted circa 1500 on north wall of Franciscan church. The Gothic Franciscan church, cloister and friary in Bolzano are located along the Via dei Francescani continuing north from Piazza Erbe and date back to the first half of the 1300s. The church’s mainly white walls are decorated with frescoes painted around 1500. The very first friary was built at Bolzano on land made available by the Bishop of Brixen, directly outside the city walls. However, the original building was destroyed by fire in 1291 and the friary was rebuilt in 1322. In 1348 the Franciscan church belonging to it was ready to be consecrated. The church was seriously damaged by bombing in 1943 - 1944.
