Chromolithograph Cromagnon \Skull of an old man\" Plate 1, Section C. Edouard Lartet and Henry Christy. \"Reliquiae Aquitanicae\" 1865-1875, Williams and Norgate, London 1875. The type specimen of the first early modern humans, Homo sapiens sapiens, dated to about 28, 000 years old. It comes from the site 'Abri de Cro-magnon' near the commune of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil in southwestern France (Dordogne). It was discovered in March 1868 with other remains, during railway workings by workers of the firm of Berthoumeyrou. Authorities were called and M. Louis Lartet came to supervise the excavation. It is often stated that Edouard Lartet found the skulls, but it was infact under his son M. Louis that the skulls were recorded on site after initial discovery. The skull is close to fully modern Europeans and shows evidence of bone degenerative pathology as well as post-mortem calcium deposits."
