Edward Everett (1794-1865) was an American politician, pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator. He belonged to the Whig party and was from Massachusetts. He also served as governor of Massachusetts, a US representative, a US senator, US Secretary of State. He was a professor at Harvard and served as Harvard's president. He was the orator at the dedication ceremony at Gettysburg and his two-hour speech preceded Lincoln's very brief speech.
