Op-posite the city of Fulton, or rather on land now-included within its limits, standing on the eastbank of the river, was an old fort, traces of whichwere jilainly discernable fifty years ago. Thisfort was built in August, 1758, by Col. Bradstreetto artord protection against attacks while carryingaround the rapids at that place, then known to allparties traveling between Albany and the westernfrontiers as the Great Carrying Place.
