The degree of homogeneity may be termedmoderate, situated as the index (standard deviation) is seen to be—midway, that is, between extremes provided by other series. Also, I may remark ^ References as iu Table III. Some Measurements made on Subjects in the Dissecting-Room 175 that the sources of the dissecting-room material are of the most female data show greater homogeneity, but, owing to the small numberof the individuals observed, no further remarks will be made here on thispart of the work. VI. Correlation of Length and Breadth. The values of the coefficient of correlation are exhibited below in Table VI. Table VI. (r=coefficient of correlation.). A notable feature of this table is the high correlation indicated by thecoefficients between the head length and breadth, and again between thecranial length and breadth in the females. In regard to the cranial relationI note that Dr Macdonell has obtained similar results from the femalecrania at Moorfields. And that author mentions (as one possible explana-tion) the large proportion of small crania in that collection. I tested thedissecting-room (female) crania by a rigorous method, and find that 13*9per cent, are certainly to be described as extremely small. This is nota verj large proportion, so that Dr Macdonells alternative explanation(in which the shortness of the series in point of numbers is held account-able) is more probable than that first mentioned. But the coefficient of correlation of cranial length and breadth in the 1 The material at Ziirich was really post-mortein room material, and consequentlythe observations represent natural conditions more c
