Waterloo Bridge, Betws-y-Coed, Conwy, North Wales. Cast iron bridge designed by civil engineer Thomas Telford. Commemorates battle of Waterloo 1815


C19th cast iron bridge on stone bations designed by civil engineer Thomas Telford to carry his improved London to Holyhead road (A5) across the River Conwy south of Betws Y Coed. Cast at Plas Kynaston foundary, Ruabon. The bridge is decorated with roses, thistles, leeks and shamrocks, the symbols of the 4 countries of the UK. Inscription reads "This arch was constructed in the same year the Battle of Waterloo was fought" (1815). Opened be be confused with Waterloo Bridge in London, built around the same time and also named after the famous battle, but opened a year later. "In 1923 the masonry abutments were refurbished, and its superstructure was strengthened by encasing the inner three ribs in concrete. A reinforced cantilevered concrete deck was added, which provided extra space for new footways; the cast iron parapet railings were re-erected on the outside of the new footways. In 1978, a new 254mm reinforced concrete deck was added and the masonry abutments were also strengthened" It is Grade 1 listed
