Early 19th-century artwork depicting a variety of devices and instruments used in chemistry experiments. At lower right (labelled 1) is a new gazometer from the Philosophical Society of London. The components at left (labelled 2 to 4) are described as De Vigne's apparatus for saturating water with gas. Across top (labelled 5 and 6) is an apparatus for freezing mercury. Gazometers are devices used to contain gases. This is Plate IX of a series on modern chemical apparatus published in London in 1801 for the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature'.
