Many middle and upper class Brazilians see the current economic crisis to be the fault of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (worker's party) which controlled the presidency in Brazil from 2003 until the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff in August 2016. Since then many former government officials have been caught up in Operação Lava Jato (operation car wash), an investigation into one of the largest corruption scandals ever. There is suspicion that the corruption reached as high as former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The Intercept has recently alleged that the Vem Pra Rua movement is not as independent as it suggests it is and is being used as a platform to promote the interests of the Political party PMDB. It is alleged that in the past PMDB used Vem Pra Rua and the right facing Movimento Brasil Livre (movement for a free Brazil) to promote for the impeachment of former president Dilma. Ironically in past the MBL and Vem Pra Rua demonstrations have been supported by members of PMDB like Paulo Skaf who is now accused in Lava Jato of receiving bribes from the construction company Odebrecht.
