Caravaggio (1509-1609) Michael Angelo da Caravaggio, after studying in hisnative city, Milan, went to Venice, whence he moved toRome. Finally he settled in Naples and became the leaderof the Naturalistic school, which flourished there under thepatronage of the Spanish viceroy. He was especially distinguished in hismanagement of light and shade, tending towards darkness ofshadows, which his followers exaggerated, so that the schoolhas been called that of the darklings. Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) Salvator Rosas reputation rests chiefly upon his land-scapes. Wild and lonely scenes were his VENICE ACADEIIY PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGINA noble ceremonial picture.
