The military cemetery at the Douaumont ossuary, Verdun, France
, Verdun, Meuse, France - The military cemetery at the Douaumont ossuary (L'ossuaire de Douaumont) which contains the mortal remains of 130,000 unknown soldiers, built between 1920 and 1932 at a fortress in the centre of the battlefield. In the cemetery there are graves of 15,000 identified soldiers. One of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the First World War and in history took place in 1916 in Verdun. The Hell of Verdun lasted several months and cost hundreds of thousands of lives.
