DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecular structure, illustration. DNA is the genetic material that controls the growth and development of all living organisms. It takes the form of strands of this double helix, with two spiralling sugar phosphate strands (white) joined by pairs of nucleotide bases (vertical coloured struts). It is the order along the strands of these nucleotides bases, of which there are four types (four colours shown here), that forms the genetic code.
