Doctor Moss. 1884 illustration of Dr F. L. Moss, the crew doctor of the Alert ship during the 1872-1876 Challenger Expedition. The Challenger Expedition, commanded by George Nares, left England on 21st December 1872 and lay the foundation for modern oceanography. It was the first seafaring expedition undertaken solely for scientific purposes and was designed to fill the gap in knowledge about the deep ocean that existed in the 19th Century.
