BARTON William Sumner Barton, city treasurer,was born in Oxford, Massachusetts, Sep-tember 30, 1824, and removed with hisparents to Worcester when he was tenyears of age. He attended the commonschools, Worcester Academy, and wasgraduated from Brown University in1844. Subsequently he studied law withhis father. Judge Ira M. Barton, withHonorable Peter C. Bacon, and at theHarvard Law School. He was admittedto the bar in 1846. After seven yearspractice in Worcester, he accepted aposition in the Bank of Commerce inBoston, in which he remained fromJune, 1854, to January, 1872, when hewas elected treasurer and collector oftaxes for tRe city of Worcester. Hehas been treasurer of the sinking funds since 1876, and also since 1872treasurer ex-oiKcio of all the trust funds of the city. Arthur P.
