While at Kings College he enlisted in theUniversity Company of the 4th Gordon High-landers and subsequently became Brigade Signal-ling Officer, retiring in 1912 with the rank ofCaptain. Immediately on the outbreak of war,although his health at the time gave cause foranxiety, he rejoined his Battalion with hisformer rank of Captain, and was retained asAdjutant to the reserve unit for over a 43 IN MEMORIAM. Ultimately he was posted to the 4th Gordons inFrance, and after participating in the whole ofthe Sotnme Battle, during which he renderedmost valuable service in his own efficient way,he was killed in action near Beaumont-Hamelon 13 November 1916. Major Gillies was a man of singular personalcharm, frank, fair and fearless, whose soundjudgment, knowledge of humanity and profes-sional attainments gave promise of a most usefuland successful career. Apart from business hewas an enthusiastic golfer and mountaineer, andas Secretary of the University Club and of theCairngorm Club was held in the highest esteemby a wide circle of friends, to whom, as well asto his profession, his untimely end was a tragicloss.
