Its popular name, by which it is now known the world over, refers to Tim- othy Hanson, who did most to make it known and appreciated. On moist, loamy or clayey soil it produces a larger hay crop than any other grass. It is not so well suited for light, sandy soils. Though preferring a moist, tem- perate climate, it withstands drought and ex- treme heat and cold. Its hay is very nourish- ing and can be preserved for a long time. It should be cut when flowering, as, if left later, the hay becomes hard and coarse. It is often sown along with red clover, and the nutritive value of the hay is greatly increased by the mixture. Height, 2 to 3 feet. If sown alone, at least one-half bushfel to the acre should be used. The seed weighs 45 lbs. to the bushel. Several grades are always on the market, dif- fering in purity and vitality. It is always most economical to buy the highest grade.
