. The Street railway journal . the Columbia street car heater,as manufactured and sold by the McGuire Manufacturing Company ofChicago. It will be noticed that very important additions have beenmade since last year. In the first place the frame intended to holdthe stove in position is made of a solid casting, and embraces the frontapron, the strap that passes around the back, and the arms that fastenit to the top of the seat rail are all in one piece. It will be noticed thatthe legs are made adjustable, so that the frame can accommodate itselfto any form of car seat, and when in position look like the arms ofan easy chair and are as firm as any part of the car. This frame isfirst set in over the car seat, the legs adjusted and fastened, and thenthe stove is simply liftedinto position. This operation can-be doneinside of ten minutes by any ordinary mechanic, and when the stove isin position it cannot be disturbed except by the use of tools. It is ad-justed so as to rest above the cushion, apparently resting upon COLUMBIA HEATER. The stove can be placed in any car without cutting or fitting eitherthe stove casing or the car seat. It does not rest upon, and, conse-quently, does not wear out either the seat, cushion, or coverings, eitherfront, top or back. It can also be set upon the floor of the car, andfor this purpose a handsome stand is used, placing the stove at anyheight desired by the railway manager. In either position it is not aneyesore, as is the case with many car heaters, but actually an ornamentto any car. The stove is a self feeder, holding twelve hours fuel, and, it isclaimed, requires no attention whatever from conductors. The fire isusually started before the car leaves the barn, so that the car goes outwarm in the morning. It burns one pound of hard coal per hour, heating a twenty-one foot car, equal to a cost of about five cents perday. The exterior is always cool, so that the passengers can sit inactual contact with it and cannot burn themselves.
