It should be gratifying to the friends of this Museum to learnthat it has already gained a foremost place among the great artinstitutions of this country and of the civilized world. Its in-creasing reputation as the storehouse of many valuable collections,some of which are unique, has attracted the attention of art loversand connoisseurs in many parts of Europe, as well as throughoutthe United States. For some years past it has been the jDurposeof the Museum authorities to give particular prominence to Amer-ican art, while not neglecting the artistic progress of other coun-tries and of all times by the collection and exhibition of the bestwork procurable in all departments of human handicraft. Duringthe past year the Museum has received visits from some of theforemost art experts and manufacturers of England and Germany,while others of equal eminence
