View N of the preaching cross & 'Druidical altar' outside the S porch of St Nicholas' Church, Trellech, Monmouthshire, Wales, UK. The present church is mainly C13th, built on the site of a possible Roman station. The original church was founded in the C7th/8th by kings Ffernwael & Meurig, the rulers of Gwent. Both the cross & stone altar are described as pre-Norman, the enigmatic slab possibly pre-Christian, Roman or even prehistoric. Trellech boasts an ancient holy well, a Bronze Age stone row, a castle mound & remains of a Norman town.
