The houseboat of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club on the polluted inland waterway, the Gowanus Canal, in Brooklyn in New York, is seen on Saturday, October, 2, 2010. The boat is being used as an experiment in operating off the grid with rainwater being recycled, solar cells providing power, as well as other experiments in environmentally conscious living. The polluted canal was recently designated a Superfund site triggering a ten year clean-up costing half a billion dollars . (© Richard B. Levine)
