Nothe Fort meaning nose is located above the entrance to Weymouth and Portland harbour, the fort was built between 1860-1872 to protect the harbour. This naval threat grew during WWI this changed in WWII with treats from the air. Coastal defences were abandoned in 1956, the fort no longer being fort now a public asset opened as a museum in 1980.
