It is an unnamed por-trait of a pretty lady with two children, paintedin a refined and delicate manner. This picture wasexhibited at the Raeburn Exhibition , 1876, andat the Exposition de portraits de femmes etdenfants, I897. It was the property of the Raeburn family •sold at the Raeburn sale 1877 to the Gomtessede Pourtales. JOHN CONSTABLE COTTAGE JOHN CONSTABLE Born in 1776. It was Sir George Beaumontfounder of the National Gallery, who prevailedupon him to come to study art in London. He first took lessons with Farrington, and in1779 he became a pupil of the Royal began by painting religious subjects but soonreturned to his fields and cottages. In 1819 he wasnamed Associate of the Royal Academy. And suc-cess that had been so long in coming was remar-kable after the Paris Salon of 1824 to which hehad sent three pictures. The death of his wife in1828 was a terrible blow to the artist. In 1829 hebecame a Member of the Royal Academy, but henever recovered from his loss and in 1837 wasfound dead in his bed. COTTAGE This picture finished about 1820 represents acottage near Salisbury, that part of the countryhe particulary loved. This is the period at whichhis best work was executed. (The W
