The unique hydraulic catafalque in the West Norwood Cemetery was used in 19th century to lower coffins from the chapel above to the catacombs below.


West Norwood Cemetery is open daily to the public, although the catacombs can only be accessed on a guided tour. It covers 42 acres (17 hectares ). It was opened in 1837 and is still in use today.
