The elevations are the direct out-come of the plan, which is irregular, and demanded, therefore,an unsymmetrical treatment (Fig. 71). Not the least charmof the house is the way the garden steals up to the little entrance forecourt is laid with rough flag-stones, their wide joints hospitable to poppies and snap-dragons, daisies and stonecrop. The scale of Barton St. Mary is much helped by thesize of the bricks used, which are only one inch and three-quarters thick. The interior treatment is of the simplestthroughout.
