Vintage portrait of English boxer Billy Edwards (1844 - 1907). Edwards, born in Birmingham, was a leading lightweight of the 1860s and 1870s who was nicknamed "Make-Believe Billy". He began boxing at the age of 14, went to the USA in 1865 and won the Lightweight Championship of America in 1868 before later losing the title to Arthur Chambers in 1872. After retiring from the ring he trained World Heavyweight Champion John L Sullivan for several fights and became wealthy from real estate investments.
