The methodof mating asgiven by differ-ent individualsvaries some-what, and for this reason the description of two suchmatings is given below. One well-known breeder giveshis method as follows: Do not double mate. Select a malewith good solid black or blue-black back. He should havegood, distinct lacing, even the main tail and wing flightsshowing signs of lacing if this can be found, but malesshowing these signs of lacing in tail and wing are very hardto get. If a clear, silvery blue male is used, the offspringare likely to come brassy or reddish in hackle. The malein this mating is depended upon mainly for the color of theoffspring. Select females of good type, which are well upon legs, with low carriage of tail and a good wedge-shaped. Fig. 65- -Black Andalusian Female. (From the Kan-sas State Experiment Station.) THE MEDITERRANEAN CLASS 185 body. These should show as clear a blue in plumage aspossible, with as good lacing as can be obtained. Avoidhens showing a smut or frost of dark color throughout thebody and wing. Another breeder describes his method of mating asfollows: Use astandard matingfor color. Thatis, do not selectextremes, suchas the use of avery dark malewith light fe-males, or viceversa. The useof these ex-tremes in mat-ing is apt tocause a mottlingof darker color, the females m p a r t i c u lacing ofthe birds
