The general principles of scouring and bleaching aretaken up, and then a study of the general methods of wool dyeingand the application of the different classes of dyestuffs to this a general knowledge of this kind has been gained, the studentnext proceeds to the practical study of color compounding and shadematching. Considerable practical experience is given in the latter,and the student is also given an opportunity of carrying on somepractical dyeing in the dye-house of the school. SILK COURSE The recent surprising growth in the silk industry,especially in Pennsylvania, has prompted the School to payparticular attention to this course, which requires two years 70 SIIvK COURSE of study of silk and matters pertaining to its intelligentmanufacture. The raw material is considered with its manypeculiarities, together with the methods of converting it intoforms suitable for wearing. A thorough training is given inthe weaves used in silk fabrics, ariention being called to themanner in which the various forms of interlacing appearin the goods. The manner in which silk takes dyestuff,together with its affinity for weighting materials and theirefifect on its strength, wearing qualities, etc., are fully con-sidered.
