Saint Croix island, in the St Croix River between the US State of Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, was the site of the first attempted settlement in North America by the French under the command of Pierre Degua, the Seiur de Mons, and Samuel de Champlain. The 1605 settlement was a failure but an international memorial to the settlers is located on the Maine shore overlooking the island.
