Facelift surgery. Image 2 of 9. Surgeon performing a facelift (rhytidectomy) on a mature woman. Here, the surgeon is making the first incision in front of the woman's ear. This procedure involves cutting the skin around the hairline and separating it from the underlying muscle. The muscles are then tightened and excess fat is removed. The skin is then lifted up and pulled back to produce a tighter, smoother face. Any excess skin is trimmed off and the ends are reattached to the facial muscles.
