The Waggoner from Mechel's "Triumph of Death" 1860

The waggoner is transporting three barrels of wine when he is interrupted by Death. One horse sprawls on the ground, as one figure of Death brandishes a wheel from the cart. Another Death clambers on wagon and tries to open a barrel. The waggoner can only throw up his hands in terror. Handcoloured engraving from Chretien Mechel's "La Triomphe de la Mort" (The Triumph of Death) published in 1860 in Stuttgart. It is believed that Mechel's engravings were not after Holbein, but after sketches by a young Peter Paul Rubens (1577~1640).
