Young boy pupils engaged in shoemaking workshop at the Islamic Arts and Crafts School Tripoli Libya
The Islamic Arts and Crafts School, 1st September Street, dates from the Ottoman era and caters for young orphans and underprivileged children in the 12-16 year age group. The Italian colonisation of Libya, 1911 - 1943, effectively halted the actvities at the school and transformed it into a prison for Libyan resistance fighters. The school is once again fully operational where young pupils receive tuition in craft skills like leatherwork, pottery, woodwork and ceramics within an Islamic philosophy. Adult education classes and rental income from adjacent buildings means the school is self financingl. Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi visited in 2001 and urged all schools to be like this.
