Watch glass of copper II sulphate pentahydrate (5 parts water, blue) and anhydrous (de-hydrated) copper sulphate (white). In the hydrated form water is held within the structure of this chemical by hydration bonds. When it is heated, the hydration bonds are broken and the water evaporates, leaving behind anhydrous copper (II) sulphate.
