Throughout the campaign, he was with thearmy, and though its practical direction was in the hands of DavidLeslie, Leven with great magnanimity assumed the sole responsibilityfor the disaster at Dunbar. Next year he was captured by somecavalry belonging to Moncks army and taken to London, where hewas shut up in the Tower. Cromwell, however, treated him withgreat consideration, and in 1654 restored him to complete
