Class 800 103 heads north to York from London Kings Cross on a test/training run as it passes Great Paxton on 17 January 2019
The East Coast main railway line runs from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh with some services also extending to Inverness and Aberdeen. The East Coast Main Line is the route of the famous Flying Scotsman and as such is considered to be the premier Anglo Scottish railway route. LNER services on the route serves London (Kings Cross) Peterborough, Grantham, Doncaster, York, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Edinburgh (Waverley), Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose, Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Perth, Pitlochry and Inverness. LNER is a directly operated train company by the Department for Transport. Services were operated by Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) until they handed back the franchise in 2018 because improvements to the route had not been made by Network Rail that were crucial to realising VTEC's income forecast.
