Fuel cell technology. Fuel cell (lower left) in an Aprilia scooter. Fuel cells generate electricity by chemical reactions. The majority of fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce water and electricity. The Aprilia scooter uses a polymer electrolyte (PEM) fuel cell, where the oxygen and hydrogen are brought together across a polymer membrane. The fuel cell provides power for the electric motor that drives the scooter. Because it only produces water vapour, instead of carbon dioxide, this technology is less polluting than the internal combustion engine. The prototype Aprilia fuel cells appeared in 2001.
